FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

We are located at 1070 Portion Rd. Farmingville, NY 11738. We are in a large white building on Portion Road just 1mile west of Nicholls Road. We rent the west side of the building that is owned by Village of Faith church.

WHAT KIND OF CHURCH ARE YOU?

This question can be hard to answer because words can mean different things to different people. Especially religious words. For instance, we’re not a Baptist church but if we were, people might have different thoughts about what that means. It could call up memories of tradition and rules for some but could mean contemporary and grace-filled to others.

We think the best way for you to find out what kind of church we are is for you to come and see for yourself. And here’s what you’ll encounter when you do:

We strive to make it all about Jesus

Our mission is to inspire people to follow Jesus. Therefore, everything we do is in an effort to accomplish that mission. Because we truly believe that following Jesus makes your life better and makes you better at life.

We’re casual and contemporary

We don’t have a dress code and we love to keep our programming and facilities fresh and fun.

We’ve got a band

We think singing songs is a great way to connect with God. We typically spend about 15 minutes at the beginning of the service singing.

We’ve got practical teaching

We teach practical application from the timeless truths found in the Bible.

We care about kids

We want your kids to love Sunday service so much that they are dragging you to church.

We’ve got community

We gather as a community that values honesty, honor, and fun. Everyone is welcome.

We keep it short

Our services last no longer than one hour

Is this a “Born Again” Church?

The answer to this question really depends on what someone means when they say “born again”. In our experience, most Long Islanders equate “born again” churches to churches that tend to be a little more expressive in the way they connect with God (i.e. jumping up and down, waving flags, praying in different languages, or even attempting to publicly heal people). And while we recognize that as a style that many people resonate with, our style is much different. We focus on simply singing a few songs, praying, and learning from the Bible. But no one is ever pressured to participate if they don’t want. We’ll even give you the option to stay seated while we sing if that’s what you’d like to do.

With that being said, we do agree with Jesus (in John chapter 3) that a persons choice to follow Jesus is kind of like a spiritual rebirth. Just like when someone starts going to the gym and begins to feel like a new person physically, following Jesus has the same effect spiritually.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

We believe that one of the most valuable things about church life is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships. At Local Church, this happens best through volunteer teams, events, and small groups. New groups launch quarterly and typically involve a weekly meeting around some kinds of topic or interest. Volunteer teams are always open to new members, but there is no pressure to help out until you are ready - for now, just be our guest!

WHY A NEW CHURCH?

The short answer is we think the Church is God’s primary means for connecting with the world. This means that when you increase the amount of churches in an area you increase the likelihood of reaching people in that area.

Think of it in terms of light. One light bulb in a room will light it up. But one hundred light bulbs in the same room will really illuminate every corner. We got this analogy from Jesus.

We want to see Long Islanders inspired to follow Jesus and we’re glad to be just one of the many lights God uses to do that. Here’s a list of some of the other great churches in our area.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

As a new church, we get asked this a lot. We began documenting our journey to start what has become Local Church August of 2020. You can look back on our entire journey at www.churchplantjourney.com.
